Job Hunt
&
In-Between Jobs
By Terry Layton
Terry Layton was the Head Basketball Coach of highly
successful men's basketball programs at the NCAA D-2, NAIA and International
levels for over 2 decades.
Last year I took an international basketball assignment in Latin
America. The travel involved with this position involved going to Europe,
Latin America and the United States. It served as a sabbatical for me.
Then I found myself looking to get back into college coaching. Even though
I had been involved as a college coach for nineteen years, I found it
difficult. During the job hunt I networked with many coaches that had
been fired or were looking for a new job. I also keep track of many things
that I discovered during the year. I hope that these items may help you
also.
Many of you are only one bad season or situation away from looking for
a job. I will list below different items that may help you or a friend
that is looking for a job:
AFTER TERMINATION
- They can take away what you are, but not who you are.
- God has not given up on you.
- Every setback is the beginning of a comeback.
- Recognize that the world hasn't ended.
- Don't burn your bridges!
- Negotiate a severance package.
- Take a college directory with you to help in search.
- Begin job search immediately!
- Determine why the job seperation occured.
- Prepare to explain why you left your last job.
- Don't make the same mistake twice.
- Maintain your self esteem.
- Spend your time looking into growth and job hunt, not in anger.
- If you hate your former boss you become his slave.
JOB HUNT
- Start a network of people just to talk with
- Start a network of people to let you know where different types of
levels of jobs are. Look at the level below and the same level. It will
be hard to get to the level above. Also, look for jobs outside of coaching.
- Start an exercise network. Get a regular pattern of exercise.
- Read at least two newspapers a day to look at transactions. Your local
library is free.
- Watch ESPN Sportscenter!
- Network with other people that are looking for a job. They may be
working a different contact network.
- Go to all-star games, clinics and camps. It is difficult but many
times it's who you know, not what you know.
- Find a support group outside of coaching to meet with. This is important
for your wellness.
- Spend time now preparing basketball. This will be difficult to do
without the security of a team or job. Prepare for times of war in times
of peace! Some days you will not see light at the end of the tunnel.
- Spend some quality time with your family.
- Develop a stronger relationship with God during this time. This can
be difficult because many times the loss of a job is handled just like
death. Many times we blame God.
- Reach out to help other people who are down when you are down. It
will help you to realize that the other people have worse problems than
you.
- Watch and find out who your true friends are. You will be amazed and
surprised to see who steps up in a real friendship role. There will
be disapointments of so called friends.
- Spend time reading books and watching basketball videos and other
areas. It will be difficult to focus some days.
- There are organizations and groups that could use your volunteer help
right now.
- It is a good time to have information interviews in other occupations.
We all have other high interest careers.
- Make sure that you keep yourself energized. This includes gifts to
yourself, nights out with your wife or family. Short mini-vacations
help to keep your attitude up.
- Try not to limit yourself geographically. You may have to relocate
for a job. Also, it may help you hela from your hurt to get away from
the circle of people who may be labeling you and your abilities.
- Select a favorite Bible verse to meditate on. James 1:2 helped me.
It talks about counting all joy when you go through trials. By going
through hurt it helps to strengthen us. No pain no gain.
- Look into some classes at a local junior college.
- Sometimes we need to take a step backward to move foreward.
- Work on your house and car. If there is income, selling these may
be your income for a year.
- In job hunting, jobs don't always go to the best qualified. Jobs many
times go to friends, relatives, and people from that region.
- Your first goal is to get an interview. Then you will see if you want
the job. Some interviews are stacked or poorly done. It may not be your
fault for not getting a job after you interview.
- Subscribe to three different job services. You may want to subscribe
to one international job service. The NCAA News is one of the best resources.
Others to consider: Athletic Employment Weekly, CBJLS and Pro-Management
Overseas Basketball Service.
- Resume Results of Pittsburgh can help you in developing your resume.
- Athletic Employment Hotline also has jobs.
I hope that these hints
can help you.
